The iberico pig is a breed of black pig that is raised and produced only in Spain under extremely strict standards. The Spanish government has introduced a separate law on the production of iberico pigs. It clearly regulates breeding stock, nutrition, grazing methods and prohibits the use of growth stimulants.
Iberico pigs born within the first 8 months will be fed natural grains. The next time, they were raised freely in the oak forest. During those 4 months of free-range farming, pigs must gain at least 40kg to be certified as an iberico black pig.
When pigs reach the standard weight of 150 - 180 kg, they are slaughtered, thereby giving birth to a nutritious iberico pork dish.

In traditional farming, black iberico pigs are allowed to roam freely in the sparse oak forest ('Dehesa'), because they are constantly moving around, burning more calories than pigs kept in captivity.
